Background about the Discovery of Botox

This is a naturally occurring neurotoxin  which is a prescription only medicine. Its therapeutic use was first discovered by an ophthalmologist to treat eye muscle disorders successfully in the 1970s. The toxin was eventually approved for use in medical treatments in 1989 in the USA.

Following this It was then approved for use in cosmetic procedures in 2002.  It is also used to treat torticollis which is neck spasm and to treat  muscle contracture, dystonia and cerebral palsy.

The use for cosmetic proposes was only discovered coincidentally during trials where it was noticed that the skin in the area being treated was smoothed and wrinkles disappeared.

What is Botox?

There are 3 botulinum type A Products licensed for cosmetic use in the U.K.

The tradenames are Botox, Azzulure and Bocouture. The neurotoxin works by blocking nerve signals in the muscles. When injected into specific areas of the face it helps to stop the muscle from over contracting and wrinkling the skin. A great solution for temporarily reducing the appearance of a variety of lines and wrinkles, including frown lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, necklines, marionette lines, nasal lines and eye wrinkles, anti-wrinkle injections can effectively smooth the skin for a youthful and rejuvenated look.

Is Botox Treatment Safe?

When administered by a trained medical practitioner within safe doses it is safe treatment. The doses required for cosmetic purposes are very small compared to doses that would be required to cause life threatening complications. Too high doses administered can lead to unwanted results and in some cases serious complications requiring medical intervention. To avoid this, please only seek to have treatment performed by a medical practitioner.

How Long Does Botox Last?

Anti-wrinkle injections provide temporary improvement in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The longevity of the results depends on several factors, including the client's anatomy, metabolism, the desired outcome, and the dose of the treatment used. The average longevity of anti-wrinkle injections results is approximately 3 months. A lower dose may be indicated for patients seeking a more natural appearance, but it should be noted that a lower dose will result in reduced longevity of the results.

Who Should Not Have Botox?

  • People with infection in the treatment site

  • Those with neuromuscular conditions e.g. myasthenia gravis

  • Those taking certain medications

A full medical consultation by a prescribing clinician who understands when not to prescribe is fundamental to your safety.
